Retraction for “Deficient Smad7 expression: A putative molecular defect in scleroderma,” by Dong C, Zhu S, Wang T, Yoon W, Li Z, Alvarez RJ, ten Dijke P, White B, Wigley FM, Goldschmidt- Clermont PJ, which appeared in issue 6, March 19, 2002, of Proc Natl Acad Sci USA (99:3908–3913; 10.1073/pnas.062010399) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 113:15, April 12, 2016. This work was submitted and reviewed during my transition from Ohio State to Duke University. An additional figure, Figure 3, was requested by the reviewers. My research team, still in Ohio then, was charged with performing the required experiments. I did not verify the primary material that was used to prepare the figure 3. It was a very busy time for me as I had just moved to Duke as Chief of Cardiology. I had entrusted my team to do the work responsibly and ethically, and I take full responsibility for my mistake and for what has happened. Unfortunately, due to the 15 years gap between the performance of the work, and the discovery of fabrication, I could not review the original data and identify, beyond the shadow of a doubt, who was responsible for the fabrication (although I do have strong suspicion). Out of my 241 scientific reports to date, this is the only one for which an ethical issue has damaged our work. It is one too many, and I deeply regret it. PJGC.
